Let’s face it most of us avoid conflict because we do not know how to resolve it in a healthy way. Here are some practical steps for a healthy outcome:
Schedule a time and place. It is best done behind closed doors.
Check your emotions at the door! Remember you may be surprised at what you hear.
Listen actively to what the other person saying. Refuse to think about your response.
Understand completely what is being said. You may need to say “do I hear you saying?”
Once clarity is reached between both people then ask, “what is the best way to resolve the issue?” The goal is not being right but clarity and mutual understanding!
The next step is moving forward. You may need to ask, “what is best for us given our working relationship?” Or we may ask “what is best for the goals of NAOS?”
Schedule a follow up meeting to evaluate the progress if necessary. Many times one will be necessary as we find old patterns of thinking just as old habits are hard to break!
If we will be disciplined and take the risk of resolving our conflicts with our team members and yes even our customers we will be amazed at the results! We will have a better understanding of our team members, a higher retention rate of current clients, more new customers and a better corporate culture!
This starts with our choice to move out of our comfort zone and resolve inevitable conflicts in a healthy way. I will be amazed as people begin seeing me as a great communicator!
